Can a portable power station save you from calling a tow truck? The short answer is yes, but there are some major caveats.

The Math Behind EV Charging

Electric vehicle batteries are massive. A Tesla Model Y Long Range has an roughly 75kWh (75,000Wh) battery.

  3. Grounding Adapter (Crucial): Because power stations use a floating ground, a Tesla (and most EVs) will reject the charge, thinking there is a dangerous electrical fault. You must purchase a Neutral-Ground Bonding Plug and plug it into one of the power station's AC outlets to trick the car into accepting the charge.
